ICS members looking for more Churchill history and how his thinking relates to today will want to explore a new offering recently launched on Substack — Mad About Churchill.

The publication has been launched by the Winston Churchill Estate, in association with its new IP partner Portland Churchill Ltd, and with input from the Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, Cambridge. Its stated aim is to “explore how the thinking, experiences, career, wit, wisdom, and legacy of one of history’s greatest leaders can help inform how we see the world today.”

Since launching this summer, it has brought together a broad range of contributors. Historian and broadcaster James Holland has written on the Atlantic Conference and the personal diplomacy behind the Anglo-American alliance. Middle East specialist Prof Ali Ansari has examined how Churchill’s complicated legacy in Iran continues to influence its politics today. Plus political advisor and financier Anthony Scaramucci has made a Wall Street case for the special relationship, arguing that Churchill was its first portfolio manager, and it’s been paying dividends ever since.

Meanwhile our own Executive Director, Adam Howard, has written on how Churchill’s enduring popularity in America compares to that of another famously British export — the Beatles. Adam explores why Churchill’s legacy endures in a way only the Fab Four can rival. And Tim Riley, Director of the National Churchill Museum answers the question, Why Fulton?

Mad About Churchill also draws directly on archival material, mixing original documents and images, such as Churchill’s own annotated speech drafts, telegrams, and correspondence, with fresh historical context and commentary, and additional features soon to be announced.

New pieces are published weekly and you can subscribe at madaboutchurchill.com.
