The International Churchill Society is deeply saddened and appalled by the desecration of Sir Winston Churchill’s statue in Parliament Square today. While the right to protest is a cornerstone of the democracy Churchill fought to preserve, the descent into criminal vandalism and the use of inflammatory, ahistorical rhetoric is a profound disservice to history and the truth.

It is a historical irony that the very freedom to protest in a democratic London exists because of Churchill’s defiance of Nazi tyranny. As the leader who rallied the world against the 20th century’s greatest practitioners of genocide and war crimes, Churchill’s legacy is defined by his role as the primary architect of the Allied victory. To deface his monument is to dishonor the man who stood as the final bulwark against a regime that sought to extinguish liberty and the Jewish people entirely.

We invite those who wish to understand the reality of Churchill’s views—rather than the caricatures of him—to engage with the primary sources and historical scholarship we provide. History is a dialogue, not a monologue delivered via a spray can.

We are grateful to the Metropolitan Police and the restoration teams for their swift action.
