The Board of Directors of the International Churchill Society (ICS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Adam Howard as the Society’s new Executive Director, effective June 30, 2025. Dr. Howard brings a distinguished record of historical scholarship, government leadership, and public engagement to this important role at a pivotal time for the Society.

Dr. Howard most recently served as The Historian of the U.S. Department of State and Director of its Office of the Historian, where he oversaw the publication of the Foreign Relations of the United States (FRUS) series—the official documentary record of U.S. foreign policy. A seasoned leader, he previously served as General Editor of the FRUS series, guiding the research, declassification, and release of nearly 100 volumes documenting the nation’s diplomatic history.

An expert in history and foreign affairs, Dr. Howard holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Florida and is the author of Sewing the Fabric of Statehood: Garment Unions, American Labor, and the Establishment of the State of Israel (University of Illinois Press, 2017). He has been a respected resource to policymakers, educators, and the public, known for bridging rigorous scholarship with accessible storytelling.

“I am delighted to welcome Adam to the ICS family,” said ICS President Randolph Churchill. “As we build on Sir Winston Churchill’s enduring legacy and expand our reach to new generations around the world, Adam’s academic grounding, strategic vision, and proven leadership will be invaluable.”

Dr. Howard will lead the organization’s operations, public programs, and institutional partnerships. His appointment marks a new chapter in the Society’s mission to promote understanding of Churchill’s life and leadership in today’s complex world.

“It is a tremendous honor to take up the mantle of Executive Director at the International Churchill Society,” said Dr. Adam Howard. “Winston Churchill’s life and leadership continue to offer timeless lessons in courage, vision, and resilience. As a historian, I’m particularly inspired by the opportunity to apply Churchill’s legacy to today’s challenges—connecting the past with the present to inform the future. I look forward to working with the ICS community to broaden our reach and deepen our impact through education, dialogue, and discovery.”

Dr. Howard succeeds Lee Pollock, who has served as Interim Executive Director since 2024. The ICS Board extends its deep gratitude to Mr. Pollock for his continued leadership and dedication to the Society.

“We are especially grateful to Lee Pollock for stepping in during this transitional period and for his steadfast stewardship of ICS,” said Jean-Paul Montupet, Chairman of the ICS Board. “Lee’s long-standing commitment to Churchill’s legacy and to the Society’s mission has ensured our continued progress and impact. We are grateful that Lee will continue to serve as an active member of the Board, where his insight and experience remain invaluable to the Society’s growth and direction.”

Dr. Howard will assume his role on June 30 and participate in the 42nd International Churchill Conference, which will take place October 9–11, 2025, in Washington, D.C.  Limited tickets are still available here.
