The International Churchill Society is excited to announce that acclaimed author and historian Arthur Herman will be the 2025 Stephen and Jane Poss Distinguished Churchill Lecturer at the ICS Annual International Conference in October 2025, in Washington, DC.
ARTHUR HERMAN, Ph.D, is Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute and Senior Fellow at the Civitas Institute at the University of Texas-Austin. He brings 35 years of experience as Pulitzer Prize Finalist historian and biographer, New York Times bestselling author, defense and tech policy analyst, and national security official.
He is the author of ten books, including the New York Times/Washington Post bestseller How the Scots Invented the Modern World; the Pulitzer Prize Finalist Gandhi and Churchill; To Rule the Waves: How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World; and Freedom’s Forge: How American Business Produced Victory in World War II, which The Economist named one of the Best Books of 2012 and which has been on the recommended reading list of Secretaries of Defense, Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, key members of Congress, and across the defense industry, since its publication.
He has served on the National Security Council as Senior Advisor to the National Security Advisor (2020-21) and was Senior Technical Writer for the Congressionally appointed Commission on Pentagon budget reform (2022-24).
As stated by ICS sponsors Stephen and Jane Poss: “Dr. Herman, with his vast expertise on how the allies rearmed to defeat Nazi Germany and Japan in World War II, and his active roles as a policy adviser to government and the defense community, is perfectly situated to link the issues of Sir Winston Churchill’s life and times to the front-page challenges of today. We are immensely pleased that he will be speaking at the ICS Conference this year.”
This will be the fifth in a series of annual lectures at the ICS Annual International Conferences. Previous Poss Lecturers have included Lord (Andrew) Roberts, author of Churchill—Walking With Destiny and many others; Tim Bouverie, author of Appeasement—Chamberlain, Hitler, Churchill and the Road to War, as well as the upcoming Allies at War; and Capt. Jerry Hendrix (Ret.), Senior Counselor at the National Security Council and author of To Provide and Maintain a Navy.
