Churchill had been MP for an Essex constituency since 1924. Not content with only a college named after him, and believing that Britain needed to ‘increase our resources of higher education’ as it moved into the 1960s, one of his last acts was to help establish the University of Essex in 1964. As one of the founding donors, he gave a small amount of money to the University and some of his books to its Library.
