The Tall Ships Trust (originally called the Sail Training Association) in the UK was founded in 1956 to enable the personal development of young people through the crewing of these magnificent ocean-going sail vessels. It’s the UK’s oldest and largest sail training charity for young people aged twelve to twenty five; seventy per cent of the young people are disadvantaged or disabled, from all socio-economic, cultural and faith backgrounds.
In 1966, a year after Churchill’s death, a thirty-seven metre schooner was launched after a group of young people sailed cross the Atlantic in a Tall Ships’ Race and were determined that Britain should have her own Tall Ship.
The Sir Winston Churchill gave thousands of people, young and old, the opportunity to sail overseas and.learn about other countries until she completed her final voyage in 2000.

An RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) boat, the Sir Winston Churchill, was in service off the Northumberland coast, at Blyth, UK, for over thirty years (from 1948 to 1982) and saved innumerable lives (it was commemorated on a special stamp).
