Churchill used Onoto fountain pens throughout his life. During the First World War, when serving in the trenches, he even wrote to Clementine, saying: ‘Send me a new Onoto pen. I have stupidly lost mine’ (23 November 1915).

The Onoto Pen Company now produce a range of British-made pens (including one called the Churchill Pinstripe and another, the Churchill Chartwell), to celebrate Churchill’s life and, in particular, his love of writing. All pens in the Sir Winston Churchill Fountain Pen range are officially authorised by Churchill Heritage and the proceeds support good causes and educational initiatives associated with preserving the heritage and legacy of Churchill. A facsimile of his short signature (‘WSC’), which he used to initial war correspondence and state documents, is reproduced on the cap’s ‘cigar-style’ sterling silver cap band and the top of the cap has a sterling silver plaque that is made from a wax casting taken from Churchill’s signet ring (the Spencer Churchill family seal of a Lion and a Gryphon).
