Deepesh Patel is one of the youngest people to be awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Travelling Fellowship. At the age of eighteen he travelled to Canada and Peru to work with scientists to investigate the potential medicinal properties of plants in the rainforest of the Peruvian Amazon and the threats posed to them by climate change. The trip involved Deepesh carrying out research under the ‘Canopy to Cures’ project, a student-run organization that he established when he was in the first year of his Natural Science degree at Durham University, after winning the National Science and Engineering Competition in 2010.
