Churchill was prepared to risk his own personal safety, too, in the interests of winning the war. So great was Churchill’s desire to be in on the action – and to make sure that all was being done to defeat the enemy – that, despite the obvious dangers, he didn’t stop travelling during the war. He wasn’t the sort of leader to direct operations from the distant and relative safety of London. He undertook long, dangerous journeys – across skies patrolled by German planes, across seas hiding the silent dangers of German U-Boats – to visit his commanders in the field, to see the action at first hand and to speak to troops in an effort to raise morale.
