Voted by BBC viewers the greatest of all Britons in 2002, Winston Churchill remains a symbol of valiant defiance against adversity. Twice prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, he led the Allied forces towards their ‘finest hour’ and his funeral saw the largest gathering of world dignitaries ever assembled.

The state funeral of Winston Churchill is at the heart of this collection, which also includes personal memories of a man whose loss was deeply felt when he died, aged 90, on 24 January 1965. Each programme is a tribute to the man who claimed to have ‘nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat’.
