Candice Millard, Author of Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a Daring Escape and the Making of Winston Churchill, to Make Extensive US Tour
New York Times best-selling author Candice Millard will discuss her new book about Winston Churchill’s exploits in the Boer War at the Thirty-third International Churchill Conference, which takes place at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D. C. from 27–29 October. This will be part of an extensive tour that she is making in the United States this fall. Millard’s first two books covered Theodore Roosevelt’s post-presidential adventures in the Amazon and the assassination of President James A. Garfield. Celebration in Newfoundland, Canada from 11–14 August Marks Historic Meeting between Churchill and Roosevelt Story by TERRY REARDON
Memorial to 1941 Meeting Between Churchill and Roosevelt in Newfoundland Delegates from Great Britain, the United States, and Canada arrived on the island of Newfoundland to commemorate the first wartime meeting between Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin Roosevelt, which took place in August 1941. The meeting at sea in Placentia Bay resulted in the Atlantic Charter, which became a foundation stone for the creation of the United Nations. Read More >

Churchill Collectables: Churchill Measures UP! By BRIAN KRAPF
This month’s article proves Churchilliana includes the unexpected and unusual. Only two inches in height and made of celluloid, Churchill’s head contains a very thin, cloth tape measure. The invention of celluloid in the 1890’s quickly caused the widespread manufacture of cheaply produced novelties to sell in dime stores. Molded tape measures like this were popular sewing novelties from the late 1800’s through the 1930’s. While there are no markings which identify the manufacturer, the piece dates to 1924–1929 when Churchill served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in the second Baldwin cabinet; similar tape measures molded as the heads of Prime Ministers Stanley Baldwin and David Lloyd George were also produced. Although Lloyd George’s term as Britain’s last Liberal Prime Minister ended in 1922, he remained a popular and active political figure until his death in 1945. Read More >
Former Secretary of State will speak at the Thirty-third International Churchill Conference in Washington, D. C. Register now for events taking place 27–29 October
James A. Baker, III, who served as Secretary of State from 1989–1992 under President George H. W. Bush, will deliver the Keynote speech at this year’s international Churchill conference. Secretary Baker will be introduced by Chris Matthews, the host of MSNBC Hardball and a trustee of The Churchill Centre. The black-tie gala that highlights this year’s conference will take place in the historic Benjamin Franklin State Dining Room at the US State Department. Secretary Baker’s time in office covered a dramatic period of history that included the end of the Cold War and the first Iraq War. Space is still available for all conference events. Read More >
