Annual Birthday Address: Marlborough: Courtier, Soldier and Diplomat by John B. Hattendorf
John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, has long been considered one of Britain’s greatest generals as well as a key English political figure in the first decade of the Eighteenth Century. But his scope was much greater, as his coalition-building European diplomacy and use of combined military and naval power demonstrate. Professor Hattendorf will illuminate how Marlborough’s skill, political antennae and perseverance combined to unite disparate forces into an alliance that forestalled the rise of a European superpower that would have dominated the continent and hindered Britain’s expansion in the Eighteenth Century. His distinguished descendant would take these lessons to heart, to the advantage of the world.
John Brewster Hattendorf holds degrees in history from Kenyon College, Brown University, and the University of Oxford, where he wrote his D.Phil. thesis in 1979 and in 2016 received Oxford’s higher doctorate, the degree of Doctor of Letters. In addition to his work on early 18th century military and international history, he is the author, co-author, editor or co-editor of more than forty books on British and American maritime history and naval warfare. From 1984 until 2016 he was the Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History at the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. On his retirement, the Chief of Naval Operations presented him with the Navy’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award. In 2011, the Naval War College established the Hattendorf Prize for Distinguished Original Research in Maritime History in his honor. The 2014 Oxford Naval Conference celebrated his distinguished career and formed the basis for a festschrift published in June 2016.
