January 1, 1970

Not until 2013 would Britain have another male singles champion in Andy Murray. However during the 1930s Fred Perry won three consecutive finals, defeating the German Gottfried von Cramm in two of them. During his whole career he won ten major titles including eight Grand Slams and two Pro Slams. However, despite his contribution to British tennis, Fred Perry was not recognised by tennis authorities until 1984 when a statue of him was erected at Wimbledon.
