Churchill also produced a final volume of The World Crisis, dealing with the Eastern Front, in 1931 and, in 1932, signed a contract with a healthy advance of £20,000 (not inconsiderable, even today) for another multi-volume work, A History of the English Speaking Peoples. He began writing this ambitious project in 1938, but with theinternational scene becoming ever more threatening, however, Churchill didn’t finish it until the 1950s.

These historical works were widely admired and were a commercial success, but the book that endeared him most to his public was his story of his ‘Early Life’, published in 1930, an elegant, nostalgic look back at his youthful years in the final days of Empire.
