The program will be housed from Sunday, July 11, until Saturday morning, July 24, on the campus of Churchill College, University of Cambridge. From Saturday afternoon, July 24, until Saturday morning, July 31, the Institute will be centered on the campus of Goodenough College in Mecklenburgh Square, near Bloomsbury in central London.  Also included are six field trips to sites related to Churchill and the Anglo-American relationship.  Travel and admission fees to all sites are provided by the grant; use of funds from your stipend is not required.

The Churchill College campus provides an ideal setting for an educational program, set in its own extensive grounds and playing fields, and offering plenty churchillcollegeof quiet spaces for individual contemplation or group discussion.  The Churchill Archives Centre is very close to the course classroom and to the participants’ sleeping rooms in the College residence halls.  The main dining hall (for lunches and dinners, including vegetarian options) and the café bar (serving coffee and light refreshments all day) are also on site.  A table in the dining hall will be allotted each day for our group, as we plan to take our weekday meals together. Nothing within College is more than a five-minute walk.  The College is located a short distance from the center of historic Cambridge, a fascinating medieval city, and participants will be able to use their free time to make the short walk or taxi drive into the town center and explore the various Colleges, museums, art galleries, churches, and other historic sites that make Cambridge such a rich cultural center.  View the Churchill College campus here: http://www.chu.cam.ac.uk/.

Cambridge is located north-northeast of London, approximately one and a half hours by train. No formal program is scheduled on the weekends, with the exception of July 24, our travel day by private coach from Cambridge to our London headquarters at Goodenough College, with a visit to Blenheim Palace en route.

At Churchill College, participants will be housed in residential courtyards in double en-suite rooms or in single en-suite rooms at an extra charge.  Teachers who opt for a roommate should consider the responsibilities of that decision and the negotiations required for a smooth and stress-free relationship.  Earphones for your computer, small reading lights, flexibility, and good will may enhance your shared experience.

More

The light and generously-proportioned rooms provide a spacious desk and free broadband internet access, with home comforts such as a hospitality tray.  Bed linen, towels, and a fan are provided in each room.  There is a laundry on site. Tokens for the laundry machines can be purchased at the Porter’s Lodge.  A wash cycle costs approximately £1.

The Archives Centre itself is air-conditioned, but our seminar locations, the Bevin Room or Fellows’ Dining Room, and sleeping rooms are not.  The College has a gym.  Participants can use the gym but are required to sign a disclaimer form before being issued with the key.  There are tennis and squash courts and a running track around the perimeter of the playing fields.

In London, pargoodenoughticipants will be housed at Goodenough College, at Mecklenburgh Square in the heart of London (near the Russell Square tube stop), in double or single en-suite rooms with continental breakfast included (www.goodenough.ac.uk/).  Goodenough College is an intellectual center for scholars with residential facilities, a dining hall, academic enrichment programs, and scholarships for graduate students and visiting academics from Commonwealth countries, the European Union, and the United States. Depending on our schedule, participants may or may not find the Goodenough dining hall convenient for lunches and dinners, though it will most likely be the most economical alternative.
