This painting, ‘Winter Sunshine, Chartwell’, is one of the most impressionistic of his paintings and the one that he submitted to an amateur art exhibition in London in 1925 and with which he won first prize (although one of the judges, Sir Joseph Duveen, refused to believe it was by an amateur). He later entered the same painting in 1947 under a pseudonym, David Winter, and gained his first entry at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition.
