Calgary, Alberta is home to the newest statue of Sir Winston Churchill. Cast in bronze, the statue was commissioned by the Sir Winston Churchill Society of Calgary in 2020 after a competition for the project among three Canadian sculptors. The statue was created by the winning sculptor, Danek Mozdzenski from Edmonton. Danek sculpted the 8’ 6” statue after poring over thousands of photographs of the wartime leader. The statue was erected at McDougall Centre in Calgary, home to the southern Alberta offices of the provincial government. The location was announced two years ago by then Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and Mark Milke, president of the Sir Winston Churchill Society of Calgary. The Sir Winston Churchill Society of Calgary raised all the funds for the statue, with all-in costs at approximately $350,000.
The statue reflects both Churchill’s energy and determination. It was unveiled on the morning of June 6, 2024, to coincide with the eightieth anniversary of D-Day. Randolph Churchill, the great-grandson of Winston Churchill and President of the International Churchill Society along with Mark Milke, former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith spoke at the unveiling. Sculptor Danek Mozdzenski was also present to unveil the statue, wrapped in a parachute before the event,
The new Winston Churchill statue was erected for three reasons: 1) to commemorate the sacrifices and contribution of Canadian troops on D-Day and throughout the Second World War; 2) to honour the leadership and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill; and 3) to commemorate Churchill’s 1929 visit to Calgary, and southern Alberta including the Canadian Rockies (as part of his three-month North American tour) and where he painted several watercolour paintings at Banff, Lake Louise, and other scenic vistas in the Canadian Rockies.
The new Churchill statue at McDougall Centre adds to the existing memorial to wartime remembrances on site, the Airman’s statue erected in 20004 by late Alberta premier, Ralph Klein, which lists and honours over 1,500 airmen from Alberta who gave their lives in the Second World War.
The Sir Winston Churchill Society of Calgary, in existence since 1966, also held a memorial banquet on the evening of June 6, 2024 with Randolph Churchill as the keynote speaker.
