By BRAIN KRAPF

This figurine of the Prime Minister was produced in 1940 by the famed British porcelain designer Clarice Cliff, the Art Director of Newport Pottery. Ms. Cliff is best known for her highly collectible porcelain dinnerware, which is immediately recognizable due to its use of different, unconventional shapes and vividly coloured patterns.

During the early days of the Second World War, however, Ms. Cliff designed and produced three pieces honouring Churchill; the six inch figurine shown here, a large charger, and a toby jug. These three pieces were all made in very limited quantities and are highly sought today by Churchilliana collectors. The base of the figurine includes the Newport Pottery factory mark on its underside.

Brian Krapf formerly served as President of the American Political Items Collectors.
