Unique Item Requires Identification: The Churchill Centre has received a special request from Mike Shorer, owner of Historic Jewellery Reproduction, for help in identifying an unusual piece of Churchilliana. A copper electroform and two plaster plaques apparently created to make a commemorative medallion have no record of production. Mike writes:
“My father, Peter Shorer FIIC was a pioneering archaeologist and the Senior Conservation Officer at the British Museum for over 40 years, working on many remarkable exhibits to restore and stabilize them for exhibition around the world. Due to his incredible skills with moulding and replicating artifacts, he was often asked to make exact reproductions for private and corporate clients. This formed the basis of the company he founded in 1969 and which I now run after he passed away in 2010.”
“Everything Dad worked on was painstakingly recorded, except, very oddly, this piece. He was obviously contacted by someone to make a rubber mould of the plaster plaque, from which he made a pure copper electroform. I would imagine the plaster is one of the preparatory stages of a medal to be struck. I would greatly appreciate any further information about this fascinating piece to give it better provenance.”
