Prestigious Business Group Studies Historic Churchill Speeches

Churchill Centre Executive Director Lee Pollock and Chairman Laurence Geller CBE were featured participants at a sold-out Churchill dinner program at the prestigious Economic Club of Chicago on September 22. Founded in 1927, the Club’s membership includes leading figures from the business industry in the Chicago area. In its eighty-seven year history, the Club has hosted hundreds of nationally and internationally recognized speakers including numerous heads of state and prominent political and business figures including several U.S. Presidents.

The Centre assisted in organizing the program for the dinner, part of the Club’s series of political discussion evenings; included were extracts from significant Churchill speeches from the 1930’s and ’40’s, notes on the context in which they were given and their impact on the political landscape of Churchill’s time. Churchill Centre and Economic Club member Charles Bobrinskoy reviewed the main outlines of Churchill’s life and career while Lee Pollock spoke about The Churchill Centre and its programs including the Centre’s National Churchill Library in Washington, DC. These presentations were followed by small group dinners with discussions of Churchill speeches moderated by Club members who are graduates of the Henry Crown Fellowship program at the Aspen Institute.

Lee Pollock noted, “As a member of the Economic Club myself, I was very pleased to participate in this event and bring the resources of The Churchill Centre to support this highly interesting program. Prior subjects in the ten-year history of this series have ranged from Lincoln and Aristotle to Machiavelli, Hobbes and Locke, so it is entirely appropriate that Winston Churchill be added to the list.”

The program was held at the historic Chicago Club and the turnout of 170 people was a record for the series. The evening concluded in Churchillian fashion with Pol Roger champagne, Johnny Walker scotch and Romeo & Julieta cigars on the Chicago Club’s new rooftop terrace.
