Forthcoming Books About Churchill!  Local Events & Announcements

Around the world members of The Churchill Centre keep a busy schedule to hono(u)r the memory of Winston Churchill and promote his legacy. Additionally, the number of new books about Churchill continues to flourish. Here is a register of recent and forthcoming events and titles:

The Happy Warrior returns to print: The Happy Warrior: The Life Story of Sir Winston Churchill as Told Through the Eagle Comic of the 1950s will be published for the first time as a premium, full-colo(u)r paperback by Unicorn Press on March 1st. Previously available only in hard cover, The Happy Warrior is a magnificent reproduction of the comic-book format biography of Churchill orginally produced as a serial on the back cover of the Eagle comic. Richard Langworth, editor of The Churchill Centre’s own journal Finest Hour provides a modern introduction. This has been described as the best-ever children’s biography of Churchill and is highly recommended.

Literally Speaking: The Literary Churchill: Author, Reader, Actor by Jonathan Rose, Professor of History at Drew University will be published by Yale University Press in the UK on 30 April and in the US on 27 May. Rose explores in tandem Churchill’s careers as statesman and author, revealing the profound influence of literature and theater on Churchill’s personal, carefully composed grand story and on the decisions he made throughout his political life. The book chronicles Churchill’s dealings with publishers, editors, literary agents, and censors.

Churchill on Trial: Churchill’s Trial: Winston Churchill and the Salvation of Free Government by Larry P. Arnn will be published by Thomas Nelson on 15 July in both the US and the UK. Dr. Arnn is the President of Hillsdale College, the publisher of the Official Churchill Biography and Document Volumes. He previously worked as a literary assistant to the Official Biographer himself, Sir Martin Gilbert. In his own study, Dr. Arnn looks at the necessity of constitutional limits upon government and exceptional men to lead those governments, uniquely taken by overlaying the life and writings of Winston Churchill with the American experiment.

Chicagoland One: On November 30, 2013, the Chicagoland Chapter sponsored a black tie event at the Union League Club Chicago. Forty members enjoyed dinner. Michael Shelden, author of Young Titan: The Making Of Winston Churchill, spoke on “Winston Churchill: Neglected Hero of the First World War”. He inspired the group and took many questions following his talk.

Chicagoland Two: Chicagoland Chapter will hold its next meeting in Chicago, June 15 for brunch at Petterino’s. H. M. Consul General, Stephen Bridges will speak to the group. Invitations will be mailed about a month prior. For information kindly contact Susan & Phil Larson at [email protected].

Vancouver One: The Churchill Society of British Columbia hosted speaker Martin Cronin on February 6, 2014 at The Vancouver Club. Mr. Cronin has over 20 years experience as a British diplomat, including several postings in the Middle East working closely with the military in that environment. He spoke to a sell-out audience of 80 people on the topic “Making Sense of Syria and its Neighbors”.

Vancouver Two: The Churchill Society of British Columbia has already sold out its Annual Banquet on Thursday, March 27th at the Vancouver Club. Margaret MacMillan, one of Canada’s most distinguished historians, will address an audience of 200 guests. Professor MacMillan will speak on “The War That Ended Peace: The Road to 1914”, an appropriate subject in this the centenary year of the First World War.

Admiral RamsayRamsay Remembered: The Churchill Archive Centre in Cambridge will host a free symposium on 6 March to commemorate Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay, the naval officer responsible for organising both the Dunkirk evacuation (Operation Dynamo) and the naval aspects of the D-Day landings (Operation Neptune.) Panelists will include Ramsay biographer Dr. Andrew Gordon and noted historians Correlli Barnett, Robin Broadhurst and Paul Kennedy. Also attending will be Adm.
