The International Churchill Society (ICS) was honored to host the Thirty-Fifth International Churchill Conference at the historic Williamsburg Lodge in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, from November 9–11, 2018. The conference brought together distinguished speakers, members of the Churchill family, scholars, and admirers to reflect on Winston Churchill’s legacy against the backdrop of history and heritage.
The conference began with a warm evening reception at the Williamsburg Lodge, where participants gathered to reconnect with friends and meet new colleagues in an atmosphere of camaraderie and anticipation.
A full day of sessions featured an outstanding lineup of presentations from leading historians and commentators, including:
Emma Soames – granddaughter of Winston Churchill
Andrew Roberts – discussing his landmark new biography Walking with Destiny
David Cannadine
Edward Lengel
Daniel Todman
John Bew
Mitchell Reiss
Brough Scott
Felix Klos
The day culminated with a keynote address by Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy (Ret.) of the Supreme Court of the United States, who offered a compelling reflection on Churchill’s role in the defense of liberty and the rule of law.
The final day of the conference carried special resonance, as attendees gathered to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918, which ended the First World War. This commemoration offered a poignant reminder of Churchill’s place in the story of the Great War and its aftermath.
The Williamsburg conference blended the richness of Colonial America’s historic setting with world-class scholarship and reflection on Churchill’s life and legacy. The program’s highlights—Justice Kennedy’s keynote, Andrew Roberts’s unveiling of Walking with Destiny, and contributions from Churchill’s own family—ensured that the Thirty-Fifth International Churchill Conference will long be remembered as an extraordinary event.
