Originally published in six volumes in the US, with the ensuing English edition making corrections and adding a few maps, The Second World War was Churchill’s account of the War from his perspective. This, after all, is the man who had joked in the House of Commons in 1948 that:

‘For my part, I consider that it will be found much better by all Parties to leave the past to history, especially as I propose to write that history myself’.

It may not be ‘history’, because it’s a very personal history (as Malcolm Muggeridge said, the volumes are ‘historic rather than historical’), but it gives an extraordinarily comprehensive and well-written account.
