Churchill’s life-long commitment to and mastery of the written and spoken word was recognised when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. He was in Bermuda when the prizes were presented by the King of Sweden in Stockholm – there was no question over which event took precedence – and Clementine accepted the award on his behalf. There is some evidence that what he had really wanted was the Nobel Peace Prize.
