Churchill, of course, had to have the best footwear, too. Peal & Co Bootmakers, founded in 1791 by Samuel Peal, were shoemakers with a client list that included crowned heads of Europe, Presidents and Hollywood royalty, such as Rudolph Valentino, Fred Astaire, Mr & Mrs Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant. They made Churchill’s shoes to order, under strict instructions to use a particular type of shoe leather ‘that does not crack so easily’. (Peal & Co finally closed their doors in 1965, the year Churchill died, but the name was bought by Brooks Brothers who still make a range of footwear under the Peal name.)
