Sport was still linked to ideas of manliness and this was epitomised by Captain Scott’s ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition to the South Pole. Proposing a toast in 1910, Leonard Darwin, the son of Charles, said: ‘Captain Scott is going to prove once again that the manhood of the nation is not dead’.
