The sporting events of the Munich Olympics were overshadowed by the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes and coaches who were taken hostage and killed by the Palestinian group Black September. Following the hostage-taking, the Olympic Games were suspended for the first time in their history. Four years later at the Montreal Olympics the Israeli team adorned their flag with a black ribbon in commemoration.
