Tragedy struck one of the twentieth century’s greatest sporting teams when, on 6 February 1958, the ‘plane carrying the Busby Babes crashed on its way back from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade. The Manchester United team and their manager Matt Busby were taking off in snowy conditions from Munich’s Riem airport when they over-shot the runway. There were twenty-three fatalities (including eight players) and many people including the manager, Matt Busby, were seriously injured.
