Honouring Courage At The British Normandy Memorial

By RANDOLPH CHURCHILL

As President of the International Churchill Society, I am proud to share an important initiative at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer. The Memorial stands above Gold Beach and records, by name, the 22,442 men and women who fell on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy. It is a place of truth and gratitude, where remembrance and education work together to ensure that sacrifice is never forgotten. The Normandy Memorial Trust is now advancing a statue of Winston Churchill on this hallowed site, creating a lasting focal point that links leadership to service and words to deeds.

As The Right Honourable The Lord Soames of Fletching PC, Trustee of the Normandy Memorial Trust, and Winston Churchill’s grandson noted, this statue would represents, “Churchill, the war leader who rallied the free world, in a majestic setting above one of the D-Day beaches where the tide of history was turned.”

This initiative complements the Winston Churchill Centre for Education and Learning, opened during the D-Day 80 commemorations. The Centre brings young people and visitors face to face with the story of 1944 through galleries and programs that explain not only how victory was won but why it matters. Together, the Memorial, the Centre, and the planned statue will help future generations understand the courage, resolve, and allied cooperation that made liberation possible. They will also invite each of us to consider our responsibility to the freedoms secured at such cost.

I hope friends of the International Churchill Society will take a moment to learn more about the Churchill statue initiative and, if moved, to support it. If you choose to make a gift, please indicate your connection to ICS so that the Trust can recognise the generosity of our community. Your support will help preserve memory, strengthen education, and carry forward the values for which the fallen fought.
