The way in which we have travelled and moved around, within our towns and cities, and from country to country, has changed dramatically in the past hundred years. Developments in transport have played a central role in history. Mechanization formed the backbone of the industrial revolution; it facilitated imperial expansion across the globe; and it expanded our individual horizons by allowing us to travel further and faster than ever before.

As our need for transport has evolved, the land around us has been changed dramatically, with railways cutting into the landscape and old dirt tracks, suitable for horse-drawn carriages, giving way to high-speed roads.
