In honor of this year’ International Churchill Conference recently held in Kansas City and Fulton, Missouri, this month’s Churchilliana is a pennant from the March 5, 1946 visit of President Truman and Prime Minister Churchill to Westminster College. Churchill, though no longer Prime Minister but Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, was still very popular in his own country and throughout the world.
Westminster’s invitation to Churchill to deliver the annual John Findley Green Foundation lecture was made with the full support and personal endorsement from President Truman. Churchill’s speech was formally titled “The Sinews of Peace” but is informally known today as the “Iron Curtain” speech. He announced the onset of the Cold War and the Soviet Union’s domination of Eastern Europe. Many historians consider this Churchill’s greatest speech; it is certainly his greatest postwar speech and likely one of the greatest speeches of the second half of the twentieth century.
This pennant is a souvenir of that famous day in history. These are rare and seldom comes to market. The green color of this pennant is particularly scarce. Be sure to grab any color you can get it you see one for sale.
