Alexander M. Worth, Jr., a Member of the Greatest Generation,
Remembers Winston Churchill and The Churchill Centre

Alexander McAlister Worth, Jr. personified the Greatest Generation. Born in 1918, he graduated from The Citadel (The Military College of South Carolina) in 1940 and took up a commission in the United States Army. Quickly promoted to the rank of Captain, Worth led Company F in the First Battalion of Darby’s Rangers through heavy combat in the Second World War including participation in the invasions of Sicily and Italy. After the war, the highly decorated veteran (he received both the Bronze Star and Purple Heart) founded an enormously successful packaging and distribution business. Following an eventful life, Mr. Worth died peacefully at the age of ninety-five. In his will he left $40,000 to The Churchill Centre, of which he was a long-time member.

After the war, Worth settled in Greensboro, North Carolina working in sales in the paper industry. In 1957 he started his own printing firm, Shamrock Corporation, which early on laid claim to be the largest manufacturer of Christmas wrapping paper in the United States. The company evolved into a national business which is still owned and operated by the Worth family.

Worth was described by those who knew him as a born leader and man among men. If someone asked him the secret of his steady, fun-loving attitude in the face of hard times and good times alike, he liked to say that after his combat experiences in the Second World War nothing ever seemed hard again. A devoted Anglophile, Worth was a strong supporter of The Churchill Centre as well as the parish church of his ancestors in Devon, England.

In accepting the bequest from the Worth Trust on behalf of The Churchill Centre, Executive Director Lee Pollock, said: “Alexander Worth was a true American hero. We were honored to count him among our members for many years, and we are further honored to have earned his posthumous support to carry out our mission to educate future generations about the importance of the life and legacy of Sir Winston Churchill.”
