“The entire Churchill family is grateful for the excitement, energy, and devotion to our mission that has already been displayed by Steve and Mitchell,” ICS President Randolph Churchill said. “This organization has an incredibly bright future, and I am pleased they are joining us in the sunlit uplands.”

Steve is an avid member of the International Churchill Society and has collected books by and about Winston Churchill for 30 years. He enjoyed a 37-year career at two of America’s leading law firms, first at Cravath, Swaine & Moore and later at Goodwin Procter LLP, a 1,200-lawyer global law firm, where as a Senior Partner he helped to build Goodwin’s Securities Litigation and SEC Enforcement Practice and served as the practice group’s Chair. Steve received his B.A. magna cum laude from Amherst College and his J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School.

Steve and his wife, Jane F. Poss, a former business reporter for The Boston Globe now live in the Cascade Mountains of Central Oregon, where they enjoy fly fishing, hiking, reading and writing about history, and visiting with their two adult sons. Stephen and Jane are the creators and sponsors of the Stephen and Jane Poss Distinguished Churchill Lecture Series at the International Churchill Society, which began in 2021.

Steve looks forward as a member of the Board of Directors to helping the ICS grow and build on its history of scholarship and engagement: “I am thrilled to be invited to join the distinguished members of the ICS Board. With threats of totalitarian aggression once again looming on the horizon, the lessons of Winston Churchill’s life, leadership and writings are more important now than in recent memory to understanding the choices facing us.  The International Churchill Society is uniquely qualified to preserve and protect the accuracy of our historical record and to communicate Winston Churchill’s legacy to current and future generations.”

Mitchell B. Reiss is an American business leader, academic, and diplomat who served as President and CEO of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, President of Washington College, and in the United States Department of State with the rank of Ambassador. For his work as the President’s Special Envoy to the Northern Ireland Peace Process, he earned the State Department’s Foreign Affairs Award for Public Service. Reiss has led commercial companies and complex organizations through periods of growth and renewal, achieving unprecedented financial success.  He is currently an international consultant with clients in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.

Reiss has appeared frequently on national and international radio and television programs and written three books and over 120 publications on foreign policy, international security, education, history, and arms control issues. He has testified numerous times before the Senate and House of Representatives on U.S. foreign policy. He has a D.Phil. in International Relations from Oxford University and a J.D. from Columbia University Law School. Mitchell and his wife have two children and two grandchildren.

“I am honored and delighted to be asked to join the Board of the International Churchill Society,” said Reiss.  “It is more essential than ever before to share with new generations Churchill’s story of courage, perseverance and vision, and his ultimate victory, against the forces of evil.”
