The International Churchill Society (ICS), in partnership with the National World War I Museum and Memorial, was proud to host the Thirty-Ninth International Churchill Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, from October 6–8, 2022. This year’s gathering offered a powerful setting to explore Winston Churchill’s legacy and the lasting impact of the Great War on the modern world.
The conference opened at the Museum and Memorial, with delegates welcomed to one of America’s most distinguished historical institutions. The evening set the tone for three days of reflection on Churchill, the First World War, and their enduring relevance.
A full day of sessions featured leading historians, authors, and commentators examining Churchill’s role during and after the Great War. Themes included the conflict’s transformative effects on Churchill’s career, the political landscape of Europe, and the world order that followed.
Highlights included keynote addresses, panel discussions, and opportunities for attendees to engage directly with scholars in the Museum’s remarkable setting.
The final day extended beyond Kansas City, with special programming at America’s National Churchill Museum in Fulton, Missouri—home of Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain” speech. These sessions tied together the themes of the conference, connecting the legacy of the First World War to Churchill’s vision for peace and freedom in the twentieth century.
By uniting two great institutions—the International Churchill Society and the National World War I Museum and Memorial—the Thirty-Ninth International Churchill Conference offered members and guests an unforgettable opportunity to explore history in the very place where it is preserved and interpreted.
