January 1, 1970

On 17 June 2015, the University of Bristol hosted a talk in the Churchill War Rooms, London as part of the Churchill 2015 commemorations of 50 years since the death of Winston Churchill. Guests heard from eminent historian and Chairman of the Churchill 2015 commemorations, Professor Sir David Cannadine, who presented new and untapped research into Winston Churchill’s unique relationship with Bristol.

Throughout his life, Churchill’s attitude to higher education was complex. Despite his initial reluctance, and what was deemed an unexpected and unusual appointment at the time, Churchill agreed to become Chancellor of the University of Bristol in 1929.

In his address, Professor Sir David Cannadine painted a picture of an illustrious Chancellor who became the longest-serving senior officer of any university – a role he enjoyed for more than half his life, until his death in 1965.
