Churchill’s legacy is evident all over the world: in the many statues created in his likeness, in the streets and schools – and pubs and bars! – named after him and in the buildings and squares that bear this name.
There’s a public square named after him in New York, in recognition both of his life and of the fact that his mother was an American, from New York; another named after him in Prague, in the Czech Republic. There are yet more squares with ‘Churchill’ in their name – the main city square in Edmonton, Canada; two more in Canada (Brighton and Newfoundland); Churchill Place in Canary Wharf, London – and many others. Schools: Again, reflecting Churchill’s belief in the importance of education, many schools have been named after Churchill: ten schools in Canada (one each in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Hamilton, Kingston, St. Catharine’s, Lethbridge, Calgary, Toronto (Scarborough) and Ottawa). At least four American high schools carry his name (in Potomac, Maryland; Livonia, Michigan; Eugene, Oregon and San Antonio, Texas).
Streets: In Norway, in recognition of Churchill’s contribution to the fight against Nazism, streets in the cities of Trondheim and Tromsø are named in Churchill’s honour; namely ‘Churchill’s vei’ in Jakobsli, Trondheim and ‘Winston Churchill’s vei’ in Tromsø – and others, too numerous to mention, all over the world.
