One example of this public school amateurism is the University Boat Race between Cambridge and Oxford which had been taking place since 1829. Notable races included the dead heat of 1877 when the judge, ‘Honest John’, is said to have announced the result as ‘Dead-Heat to Oxford by 5 feet’.
