Other sports such as cricket also became increasingly popular during this period. The most notable match of the late nineteenth century occurred in 1882 when Australia won a test match in England for the first time, thus marking the beginning of The Ashes. The Sporting Times recorded this sporting travesty as follows:

In Affectionate Remembrance of English Cricket, which died at the Oval on 29th August 1882, Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances / R.I.P. / N.B. – The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.

The most famous player of this period was the qualified doctor and esteemed cricketer W.G.Grace.
