Victory in spite of all terror!”

Confronting the Challenge of Terrorism was an address made by Sir Winston Churchill’s grandson, the late Winston Churchill Jr, to the National Press Club in Washington DC on Thursday 11th October, 2001. The speech, which makes stirring reference to Sir Winston throughout, was delivered just one month after the 9/11 Twin Towers disaster in New York and was originally made available to the public by Elizabeth (Beth) Churchill Tolson, who granted permission for it to be viewed in its entirety on the University of King’s College website as part of the ‘Churchill 2015’ celebrations – a unique celebration of the life and legacy of Churchill, fifty years after his death, sixty years after his final resignation as Prime Minister, and seventy five years after his ‘finest hour’ in 1940.

Elizabeth (who is a direct lineal descendant of the Hantsport/Windsor 18th/19th century Churchill wooden shipbuilding industry and has made Churchill family history her life-long research) came into possession of the speech in 2003 after receiving a handwritten letter from Winston Churchill Jr to congratulate her upon the publication of one of her articles. A copy of the speech – which Elizabeth has kindly allowed us to reproduce here – also came enclosed within the same envelope.
