‘Antico’, the very popular crossword setter in the monthly magazine The Oldie, was, in January 2015, clearly inspired by the fifty-year anniversary of Churchill’s State Funeral. A keen enthusiast noticed that all the unclued words (or answers) in the ‘genius’ crossword in January 2015’s issue referred to the Funeral:
1 Down, 14 Down, 28 Down, 46 Down together give ‘Wins’, ‘Ton’, ‘Church’, ‘Ill’ (clues being: letters giving victories; weight; house of god; insufficiently)
13 Across and 20 Across = State Funeral
5D and 27D = St. Paul’s Cathedral
34A = Thames
39D = Boat
3D = Havengore (the name of the boat, separately clued by 36A: Retreat = haven; 11A: Pierce = gore)
50A = Bladon
Trivial this may be, but it shows that Churchill’s influence is reflected in many diverse ways.
