With these all these cars on the road, deaths were high. In this 1932 speech H.G. Wells warned of the dangers of the motor car.

Innovations in safety soon followed: Mary Anderson invented windscreen wipers in 1903 (although these were powered by hand!).

In 1934 a 30mph speed limit was enforced in built-up areas and double yellow lines were introduced in 1958.
