Google Introduces Nexus 7 Tablet in the UK With Churchill’s Words

Never Give In!With the blessings of the Churchill estate through the Curtis Brown Literary and Talent Agency, Google launched a marketing campaign for its 7″ tablet known as Nexus 7 that incorporates some of the most famous words spoken by Winston Churchill.  The speech Churchill gave in Washington to a joint session of Congress on Boxing Day, 1941 and his “Never Give In” address made to the boys of Harrow School the previous October feature in a one minute television commercial.  The advertisement tells the story of a schoolboy who uses the tools on the Nexus 7 to research and prepare a class presentation that requires him to overcome his fear of public speaking.  To view commercial CLICK HERE.

Churchill himself worked to overcome a speech impediment.  During the 1920s he sought help from Cortland MacMahon, Instructor For Speech Defects and Breathing Exercises at St. Bartholowmew’s Hospital.  Churchill believed that he benefitted from MacMahon’s treatment “to the extent almost of a perfect cure” and felt it his “duty to spread the good tidings to others who may be similarly helped.”  One of those whom Churchill referred to MacMahon was the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VIII.  In 1928 MacMahon wrote Churchill that he had commenced treatment with the prince and thanked him for the reference. All this took place at the same time the Duke of York, the future King George VI, was being treated by the Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue, a story now made famous by the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech.
