On the 10th of December 1936, at Fort Belvedere, in the grounds of Great Windsor Park, King Edward VIII signed formal abdication notices, signalling his decision to step down from the throne. This significant event was witnessed by his three younger brothers: Prince Albert, who succeeded Edward as King George VI; Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester; and Prince George, Duke of Kent. The following day, the legal instrument for Edward’s abdication was put into effect through the passing of an Act of Parliament known as His Majesty’s Declaration of Abdication Act 1936.
