Fittingly, given his role as First Lord of the Admiralty twice in his career, several ships have been named in Churchill’s honour. These include two Royal Navy warships, both called HMS Churchill; the destroyer USS Herndon (DD-198) (I45) (1940–1944) and the submarine HMS Churchill (S46) (1970–1991).
On 10 March 2001, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) was commissioned into the United States Navy. The launch and christening of the ship two years earlier was co-sponsored by Churchill’s daughter, Lady Soames.
