Chicago area Churchillians gathered on Dec 9th at the Union League Club for the Chicagoland Chapter black tie celebration commemorating the 137th anniversary of the birth of Sir Winston.

Prof. John Maurer, Chairman of the Strategy and Policy Department at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I. addressed the group on the subject of Churchill, Roosevelt and the Coming of the War in the Pacific, skillfully exploring the strategic options available to the Allied and Axis powers and their leaders as tensions grew in the 1930’s.

Dr. Maurer is a graduate of Yale University and holds a M.A.L.D. and Ph.D. in International Relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and was previously Executive Editor of Orbis: A Journal of World Affairs and a senior research fellow at Foreign Policy Research Institute. For the last fifteen years, he has taught a course concentrating on Churchill’s role as a statesman, war leader, and strategist that has been taken by over 200 career military officers. He is writing a book that examines Churchill’s role in the 1920s and the 1930s as Britain faced rising challenges to its position as a global superpower.

Following the presentation, attendees asked an extensive series of questions, reflecting the enthusiastic response to Prof. Maurer’s remarks.

Susan & Phil Larson, Co-Presidents of the Chicagoland Chapter, hosted the event, with longtime TCC member Joe Troiani offering the Loyal Toast of the evening.

Churchill Centre Executive Director Lee Pollock provided an update on Churchill Centre news and activities and the Centre’s Chief Financial Officer, Dan Myers greeted members.
