Along with various legal reforms, such as the Equal Pay Act of 1970 in the UK, society’s attitude towards women and gender roles also began to change. Women strove to create a more positive image for themselves in the sphere of popular culture – through music, art, literature and the media – where sexist representations of women still dominated. A further wave of feminism emerged in the 1990s, with a particular focus on fostering a more positive image of women’s sexuality and challenging deeply-imbedded assumptions and stereotypes about women.
