DESCRIPTION:Churchill’s Image\nJoin us for a discussion on Churchill’s image with experts Kate Clements and Anthony Richards. Both authors are due to release new books later this year which include Winston Churchill: IWM Photography Collection\, part of the IWM Photography Collection series and Anthony Richards book Churchill: A Visual History. \nThese new works provide a rich visual history of Churchill’s life by pulling together artefacts\, interviews\, art and photography from IWM’s extensive collections to present Churchill’s story like never before. The speakers have selected a series of images for this In Conversation With: event for an in-depth analysis into the defining moments of Churchill’s life as a politician\, solider and wartime leader. \nFollowing the talk\, take the opportunity to explore Churchill War Rooms. From the Map Room where numerous operations were planned\, to Churchill’s bedroom\, where he made some of his famous speeches. \nAbout the Speakers\nKate Clements\nKate Clements has worked at Imperial War Museums since 2006. She has curated a number of exhibitions at IWM London\, including the permanent\, award-winning Second World War Galleries\, the Victoria Cross and George Cross Gallery Extraordinary Heroes\, and Crown and Conflict: Portraits of a Queen in Wartime. \nKate is the author of Total War: A People’s History of the Second World War and The Royal Family in Wartime. She has also delivered digital historical content\, including a popular podcast series\, Voices of the First World War. Kate is currently the Curator at Churchill War Rooms. \nAnthony Richards\nAnthony Richards has worked at Imperial War Museums for nearly thirty years. He is responsible for IWM’s extensive document and sound archives. An experienced historian and qualified archivist\, he has contributed to many publications and media projects based on personal written testimony of the two world wars\, including articles for The Telegraph\, the Royal Mail Yearbook\, the ITV series The Great War: The People’s Story and Emmerdale 1918. \nHis many books include the Sunday Times bestseller ‘D-Day and Normandy: A Visual History’ and the widely acclaimed ‘True Story of the Christmas Truce’. \n

SUMMARY:IWM Presents: The Darkest Hour
DESCRIPTION:The Darkest Hour\nJoin IWM for a unique screening of The Darkest Hour\, in the rooms where the film’s events happened. \nDirected by Joe Wright\, The Darkest Hour is the dramatic retelling of the early days of the Second World War. With the fall of France imminent\, and the looming threat of Nazi invasion\, newly appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (played by Oscar-winning Gary Oldman) rallies a nation to fight for its survival. \nKate Clements\, IWM Curator\, will give a short introduction to the film and the role of Churchill War Rooms in this part of Churchill’s life. She will be joined by Jeni Leatherby who will discuss the research required by the production team for the biopic. \nAs part of this screening\, guests will also meet Merlin Hanbury-Tenison\, who has been a military advisor on films from Star Wars and Marvel to historical military productions. He will discuss his experience in coordinating some of the battle scenes in the Darkest Hour. \nAt the end of the screening you will have the opportunity to explore the historic rooms\, walking in the footsteps of Churchill and spot the locations featured in the film\, including the historic Map Room\, the Cabinet Room\, Churchill’s Bedroom and the Transatlantic Telephone Room. \nAbout the Speakers\nKate Clements\nKate Clements has worked at Imperial War Museums since 2006. She has curated a number of exhibitions at IWM London\, including the permanent\, award-winning Second World War Galleries\, the Victoria Cross and George Cross Gallery Extraordinary Heroes and Crown and Conflict: Portraits of a Queen in Wartime. \nKate is the author of Total War: A People’s History of the Second World War and The Royal Family in Wartime. She has also delivered digital historical content\, including a popular podcast series\, Voices of the First World War. \nMerlin Hanbury-Tenison\nMerlin served in the British Army and deployed on three combat tours of Afghanistan during the early years of the conflict. With a wealth of battlefield\, tactical and strategic experience\, Merlin now works as a military advisor on films from Star Wars to historical military productions including Darkest Hour. \nJennifer Leatherby\nJenni led historical Behind the Glass tours at Churchill War Rooms for senior crew members involved in the production of Darkest Hour\, including the director\, Joe Wright\, leading actors\, and members of the art department. She also acted as an advisor on different elements of the production to ensure historical accuracy and attended meetings at their production offices. \n

After the talk\, take the time to meet the speakers\, ask questions and explore Churchill War Rooms and the Churchill Museum after-hours. \nAbout the Speakers\nAllen Packwood\nAllen Packwood is a Fellow of Churchill College\, Cambridge\, and the Director of the Churchill Archives Centre. He is a qualified archivist and was co-curator of ‘Churchill and the Great Republic’\, a Library of Congress exhibition and of ‘Churchill: The Power of Words’\, a display at the Morgan Library in New York. His work as one of the foremost experts on Winston Churchill takes him around the world. \nKevin Ruane\nA professor of modern history\, Kevin Ruane specialises in modern history and has written extensively on the Cold War\, the Nuclear Age\, the Vietnam War\, and the Anglo-American ‘Special Relationship’. \nKevin’s book Churchill and the Bomb explores Churchill’s evolving views on nuclear weapons. From regarding the bomb as a weapon of war in the struggle with Nazi Germany to one of containment during the Cold War\, before advocating for what would become known as ‘mutually assured destruction’ as the key to preventing the Cold War flaring into an apocalyptic nuclear war. \nKate Clements\nKate Clements has worked at Imperial War Museums since 2006.
